AVHRR satellite composite image of the region. The satellite collects
information in the visible and infrared wavelengths. It is a powerful source
of information on water and temperature, as well as vegetation types. Each
pixel is 1 kilometer wide. Click on the thumbnail or here
to download a ~247 kb gif file. The map image is from the National Oceans
and Atmosphere Administration's (NOAA) web site. Full

National Oceans and Atmosphere Administration, which primarily collects
weather information, has collected information about society's activities
by imaging light at night by satellite. This image of the western U.S. is
a map of visible near-infrared light sources and mainly shows light from
cities and towns. Off-shore oil rigs also show near California. Many cities
and towns string along Interstate highways. Lights from cities also outline
coastlines and interior valleys. Click on the thumbnail or here
to download a ~14 kb gif file.
Shaded relief image
of the southwestern U.S. constructed from digital elevation models (DEMs).
Digital information about the earth's surface derived from topographic maps
is used to depict relief as if the sun lit the topography from a chosen
direction. To this relief model is added color that corresponds to different
elelvations, so the high mountains and low valleys can be easily distinguished.

~179 kb gif file. More images for several states are available from
the USGS
Flagstaff office .
What is a digital
shaded relief map???

shaded relief map (78 kb gif) of
the United States, by G.P. Thelin and R.J. Pike (Landforms of the Conterminous
United States - A Digital Shaded-Relief Portrayal, U.S. Geological Survey
Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-2206, 1991). Download

Images of damage caused by the October 17, 1989 Loma
Prieta earthquake (also available on CD-ROM as USGS publication DDS-29)![]()
Images of
volcanoes in action
in a number of places globally and their consequences, from lava and ash
flows to mudflows and floods. Includes information on hwy volcanoes erupt
and how we can minimize the damage from eruptions by predicting them and
act in time.
Images of landslide
damage and information on how and where these destructive events happen.
Includes examples from recent storms.
Images of earthquake damage, information on recent
earthquakes (where and how big they were), and information on why earthquakes
occur.
