The geologic structure of
the San Francisco Bay region is a complex series of subterranes or blocks which
are bounded by faults. Stratigraphic sequences which characterize each of the
blocks are different, either because of different rock types or because of different
stratigraphic relationships among similar rock types. These stratigraphic differences
are due to changes in depositional environments or unconformities and attest
to the complex tectonic history of the region.
The purpose of the present study is to describe the Cenozoic stratigraphy of the San Francisco Bay region and correlate between the various formations in order to understand basin history and evolution. Click colored block to see the stratigraphy, age, and environmental interpretations suggested for that block. |
