Digital Geologic Map Techniques Clearinghouse
This site is a prototype clearinghouse for techniques, procedures, documentation,
software and macros that support the creation, use and release of digital
geologic map datasets. It is hosted by the National Cooperative Geologic
Mapping Program, Western Geologic Mapping Team. This site is currently
under active construction - please
contribute your techniques!

Ten Years of Creating, Reviewing and Releasing Geologic Map
Databases: Lessons Learned, by Todd Fitzgibbon, presented at the
1999 AASG - USGS Digital Mapping Techniques Workshop.
Digital geologic map data models:
Here is a partial list of geologic map data models and structures. Not
all are documented explicitly as data models - some data models are
embedded in application software such as Alacarte and GSMCAD. [Links
and more documentation to follow. ttf]
- National Geologic Map Data Model
- GSMCAD and original GSMAP data model
- Alacarte data model
- Simple Digital Geologic Map Data Model (WGMT and others)
- Stewart major-minor code data model (and derivatives)
Techniques for the creation of geologic map databases:
- Digital Compilation of Geologic Mapping, DRAFT,
December 1998.
Prepared by:
L. Sue Beard, Debra Block, Melissa Aldrich, Haydee Hajmpton, and Anita Kaye,
Western National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Team, Flagstaff, Arizona.
-
digital.pdf (149 KB, 73 pages) PDF format for readability.
-
digital.txt (148 KB) Text format so that AMLs, lookup tables and so on
can be cut and pasted into individual files.
- Field systems for geologic mappers, (tfitz@usgs.gov)
- GSMCAD
-
Alacarte, (tfitz@usgs.gov and
cwent@usgs.gov)
Techniques for the analysis and integration of geologic map databases:
Techniques for the creation of geologic map graphics (cartographic
tools):
- North Arrow AML - noar-aml.txt
(save as noar.aml)
- Function - plots standard USGS north arrow for declinations between
0 and 90 degrees east
- Requires - ARC/INFO 7.x including ArcPlot on UNIX or WinNT, lineset
geology.lin, shadeset alc1.shd

- Last update - 4 March 1998
- Arc/Info and ArcView Symbols page
- Unofficial Arc/Info and ArcView geologic symbols used on the Vermont project
- Includes links to other sites for Arc/Info and ArcView symbols
- Maintained by Greg Walsh, USGS (gwalsh@usgs.gov)
- New Digital Cartographic Symbol Standards page
Techniques for the review and release of geologic map databases:
- Review procedures for digital database Open-File publications -
digitalrev.txt
- A simple form for the review of geologic map databases in ARC/INFO format
(tfitz@usgs.gov):
- Review AML - review.tar -
- Tar file containing 7 ascii files (4 .aml files, 1 .menu file, 1 help file, and a README file).
- View the readme file - REVREADME - for instructions on using the Review AML
- By - Scott Graham, USGS (sgraham@usgs.gov)

- Web Page Template - web_template.htm -
- Web page template in ascii format for publication of
digital open-files on wrgis
